Our Model

Bringing Science to the Students

BioOdyssey is creating more equitable opportunities to higher education and careers in science by broadening access to hands-on experience and training in biotechnology for high school students from underserved communities.

Why It’s Important

Real world experience is invaluable to gaining admission to college, applying for a job, or simply figuring out what the right path is after leaving high school. Intense competition for limited programs, a lack of resources, or even a lack of awareness locks many students from underserved communities out of gaining the early experience that can lead to careers in high-paying fields.

How We’ll Do it

BioOdyssey is launching a professional development program that gives science teachers hands-on experience with core biotechnology methods and concepts. Through interactive workshops and lab sessions, teachers gain the knowledge, skills, and materials to bring authentic biotech learning into their classrooms - enhancing engagement and fostering inquiry-driven, independent thinking.

The laboratory components of the program are designed to be adaptable to each teacher’s goals. Overall, the experiments progress in a logical sequence that connects smaller investigations into a cohesive, project-based framework. At the same time, each lab can stand alone as a modular activity that supplements an existing curriculum.

In addition to training and classroom-ready resources - such as reagents and equipment - BioOdyssey provides “final mile” support. This includes consultation on managing lab activities within school settings and ongoing assistance throughout the academic year, from troubleshooting to experiment refreshers. By building lasting partnerships with teachers, we aim to make biotechnology education accessible, sustainable, and engaging for the next generation of scientists.

Key Features

  • Developing programs directly in high schools addresses one of the barriers to access; transportation

  • Thesis-centered projects provide an opportunity to gain experience from idea conception to final project results
